More Small Town News

This is from my old hometown newspaper:

Halloween to remain Oct. 31

Weatherford will observe Halloween on Oct. 31, Mayor Ed Berrong Jr. said.

The date falls on a Friday night football game and a number of individuals had already called City Hall asking if Halloween would be moved to another night.

The mayor decided to keep it the traditional night.

On some level it amazes me that this sort of thing is up for discussion. I do remember that if Halloween fell on a Sunday the observance of Halloween was moved so that it didn't interfere with evening church services. But it's still strange.

Tell me about it... I thought it was odd that we dedicated ourselves in band to practicing and marching during football games... I always thought it was such a waste of time... Band is supposed to be for playing music...

Oh I don't know - I liked marching band. We did have our fun, as dorky and misguided as it may have been - like playing the fight song so fast that the cheerleaders couldn't keep up. (The pettiness of a band geek knows no bounds.)

Being drum major probably affected my outlook somewhat.

I guess that you remember your first public
one at a baseball? game when you were about 5-6.
From outfield you clearly yelled " Mom I've
got a bloody nose" For some reason I was prepared
with a handful of Kleenex and was ready to
hit the dirt but was restrained by your Father
who informed me that I just couldn't go out
there with those tissues to mop up. So, some-
how you managed until your team came in.
