If the company email is down, how do you let people know email is down?

One of my dearest friends that I worked with in TV once told me this story.
In the late 1960s he was working master control at Channel 2 in Tulsa late one night. The transmitter went down and they were off the air.
The station's manager called him on the phone and demanded that he run an apology message.
So my friend played the recorded apology while holding the phone receiver up to the speaker.
That satisfied his boss.
